Simple Thanksgiving Traditions

This week I’m thrilled to share a piece by my fellow food blogging friend Clair Palmer. Below Clair shares her thoughts on honoring family and cultural Thanksgiving traditions, and sometimes making your own.

The best things in life I find are always the simplest...

There is no question that this Thanksgiving has forced all of us to think differently about this coming holiday....and the simple ways that we can find joy and blessings even in a year of great trial and adversity.

Thanksgiving is a really special time of year. It is a time that we would normally gather with family and friends to remember and to celebrate the wonderful blessings the year has bought. But even more, it is also a time to commemorate and to share in the tradition with those that we love.

A young girl growing up in the South, tradition was not big in our family. In fact it wasn't until later in life that I learned what family tradition looked like. Once I became an adult, I had my own vision and ideas of what my family holiday rituals would be.  Eating sweet potato pie and watching the movie The Blind Side has been our family’s favorite Thanksgiving conventions so far!

This year has been hard; there is no question about that. But I believe that when we look for the simple...the small...the tiny wins, we can then focus our lens on what is most important and embrace the elation and blessings this year can and still may bring.

The best things in life I find are always the simplest and today I am sharing with you my Simple Rustic Sweet Potato Pie. I call it rustic because it is just that. Where most Sweet Potato Pies are whipped to a smooth texture, this recipe proves that a pie can still be delicious without the fuss for perfect.

To give a bit of history on this pie cuisine, sweet potato pie (also known as the cousin) is the pumpkin pie of the African American holiday tradition. This has been a part of  the Southern Afro- Cuisine since the time of our slave ancestors and so it is no surprise that this dish still represents as part of  the African- American Heritage as we see today.

This pie is typically eaten warm but can also be enjoyed at room temperature. You can also make it a couple days ahead or freeze it to enjoy later. This pie has all the sweet flavors that Fall brings...all combined together in a perfect Thanksgiving Dish.
